For those into such things, apparently some BABYLON 5 promos are going to
be downlinked to TV stations shortly. They will be carried on T301/2V, and
will be carried at 7 p.m. Friday, noon Saturday, and 9 a.m. Monday. (I assume
that these are East Coast times, but I'm not 100% sure, so you may want to
check.)
It's my assumption that this will probably be the satellite that will
later carry BABYLON 5 itself.

I have to say that I have been around sat. TV for some time and
I cann't identify T301. If you mean satellite T3, transponder 01, it
seems to me that transponder is already in use as a pay-per-view channle.
I don't understand 2V either.
I would love to tape this downlink and would hate to let this
weekend pass without seeing it. ( I guess I am one of 'those' who is
into such thing, as the post says ). If you could help me out that would
be great. Please feal free to e-mail me directly if you wish.

To repeat, the downlink is on T301 (Telestar 301, same sat the has ST:TNG),
channel 2V (2 Vertical, which corresponds to transponder 3) at 7 p.m. Friday,
noon Saturday, and 9 am Monday. This is the normal Warner Bros. sat feed
channel. The promo feed is for all of the Prime Time Network shows, which
also includes the two announced series, "Time Trax" and "Kung Fu: The Legend
Continues", a "Wild Wild West" miniseries, and, of course, "Babylon 5".
My guess is that the whole thing will be a half hour, maybe a full hour.

B5 group,
(this got kinda long, and wordy...sorry, but I am late as is)
For those keeping score, the downlink was on T1 transponder 3 (which
is the 2nd verticle channel, hence 2V). Many thanks to all those who sent
letters to here and personal e-mail to me, helping clarify where to find the
downlink.
Since I haven't seen anyone comment on the downlink, I will give
mine. I include nothing that I would call a 'spoiler', for those of you
interested in staying away from such things. As Dr. McCoy might
say, 'I am a physics student, not a TV reviewer', so if anyone can offer
better reviews (shouldn't be hard) , please do, I would love to hear them.
The PTEN (Prime Time Entertainment Network) preview for all 4 of its
new shows lasted about 30 minutes, but the B5 section was only 5 minutes.
I'll start first with the computer graphics I saw. Several exterior views
of the station from different points of view. The
motion (rotation) of the station added alot of depth to the sceens. The
CamBot from the Jan 93 Starlog Spectacular was shown several times as were
several shots of Vorlon ships. Several of the space shots (one looked like
an attack sceen) were wonderfully complex. Lots of action occuring at the
same time. I must say that the computer effects were much better than
anything I have seen. I had a wonderfull oportunity to compare computer
effects with some of the best model FX, since Empire Strikes Back and
Return of the Jedi were both on satellite this weekend. I have to say I
felt the difference between computer and model effects was close to
indistinguishable (if I spelled that right, it's luck). I was *very*
surprised at that. In addition, comparisons to Star Wars is hardly
fair given the budget and long lead times for a movie compared to a TV show.
Infact the attack sceen (which had what seemed dozens, if not more, ships
in it) was easily on par with Industrial Light and Magic's similar sceen
for Jedi. Ok, so I feal the computer effects are very nice. If B5
trys to live on its effects, it will die a quick and ugly ratings death.
I am glad to hear that the people involved with it feal the real meat
of a good SciFi show is its story.
What of the interior shots and sceens with the main characters?
The aliens look good, on par with anyting, TV or movie, you want to
compare them with. The few sceens with dialog were short, but I must
say that the actors seemed much smoother and more, dare I say 'realistic',
than first year ST TNG episodes. [I will say here that comparisons to
any other season other than the first of ST TNG is hardly fair since
time has given the ST TNG actors time to develope there characters.
The acting in the last couple of years has been top notch.] Like I
said, the sceens were short, but (to their credit) projected some
good depth in a short amount of time. For those of you with the
September Starlog, I felt only the drawing of the Narn ambassador
looked close to what I saw on the downlink.
All in all...I was impressed. Can't wait till February.
I would like to add one more thing about the computer effects. I wish
I could thank who ever it was who designed the Vorlon ships. They
look wonderfully ALIEN. It about time!!!!! To many so called 'alien'
vessels in SciFi look like they were made by Boeing or Rockwell. It's
about time our imagination was sparked by some good imagination on
screen.
If anyone hears more about future downlinks, please pass it along.
